For this project, I chose to take pictures and interview my grandma whose name is Janine Vaughan
Interview:
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Serious, creative, and a searcher (I'm always interested in learning about why I'm here/the meaning of life and my part in that).
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to live in another country to teach children, and learn more about religion.
If you were to be on the cover of a magazine, what would it look like and what would the story be about?
It would probably feature my activism and involvement with social justice. I would want to take the cover photo with the family we sponsored after the Vietnam war, because I would want them to be a part of the story.
If you could do a photoshoot anywhere, where would you do it?
I would want it to be at the Metolius River, because that is where I love to go with my family and it has many good memories.
Did you enjoy school when you were younger?
Yes I enjoyed going to school, because I have always loved to learn. However I did not like homework.
What made you want to be a teacher?
I actually wouldn't chose to be a teacher if I could do it over again. I mainly became one, because my mother was one and it was one of the few jobs open to women at the time. I also had teachers I really liked which influenced my decision. If I had more opportunities I would have maybe done something related to books/libraries, or I would have done interior design.
What were your favorite hobbies when you were younger?
I loved to swim, ride my bike, and read. I would always climb up this big tree that was on our property, but far away from the house. This was my favorite spot to read as a little girl.
What are your favorite hobbies now?
I've always loved to read, and I also love quilting, knitting, going on walks, and spending time with my friends.
How has photography changed within your lifetime?
There used to be what we called brownie cameras, that were small box sized cameras that you put a roll of film into and it could only take 24 or 36 pictures. After the pictures were taken, you would have to take them to the photo developer to see them. At first pictures only came in black and white but I can remember starting to see colored photos at around 8-10 years old. My family would only take picture at special occasions, because of the money and time it took to get them developed. Slowly cameras started getting smaller and more advanced, until now where everybody just uses their phones.
